I don't know how many times in the past I picked up a red packet of taco seasoning from the Mexican aisle in the grocery store. I even spent a $1 on a white one for fajitas and another colored red for enchiladas.
I never really thought much about it. What's in it? I don't care. It just tastes GOOD.
Then, I did look at it. I read the fine print. SALT. SALT and more SALT.
Um, not so good.
So, on a whim and on an evening I had no packet in hand, I went to the internet for some guidance on taco seasoning. Little did I know there are 6 trillion different varieties of seasoning depending on what mood you're in.
I thought I'd stick with the basics and pretty much went with one that used all the ingredients I had in my cupboard. (Does anyone say cupboard anymore?)
Here is the best one I have used and I even cross over and used it for chicken fajitas. LOVE the flavor and LOVE knowing what's inside. All GOOD stuff.
Original Recipe: Allrecipes.com
Taco Seasoning
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
I usually double or triple this recipe (depending on how much I have in stock) and seal in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for later use.

OMG, we just made our own taco seasoning for the first time last night and I felt like I had struck gold, never having to buy taco seasoning at the store again! I even told Garrett I should blog about it -- hahahahah now I don't have to and I love your for that! :) YUM

Fantastic--thanks for sharing this! I have high blood pressure, so I can't eat a lot of salt. What a great way to replace the red packets!

I love tacos, but my favorite seasoning has MSG in it. (GAH.) So I am totally going to try this recipe!

It was nice though to step into Starbucks and relax for a few today.
