Recently I was lucky enough to travel to New Orleans for work. While work kept me busy, I made sure to squeeze in some serious eating. Here are some of the highlights.
My one night in New Orleans I had dinner at Herbsaint. The softshell crab that I had as my entree was probably the best thing that I ate on this trip.
The fried crab was served on top of a cabbage salad with a sweet-hot chili sauce. The flavors were perfectly balanced and this dish was a perfect mix of hot, cool, crunchy, spicy, salty and sweet. I'm still thinking about it a couple of weeks later!
Breakfast was the quintessential cafe au lait and beignets at Cafe du Monde.
And for lunch just before my flight home I hit Cochon in the Warehouse District. My favorite part of this meal was the pickled shrimp appetizer (shown here with a housemade pork pate amuse bouche that was also pretty memorable).
The shrimp were pickled in a brine with some hot chilis and accompanied by fresh corn and fresh herbs. Totally refreshing and delicious.
Obviously I barely scratched the surface of the New Orleans restaurant scene, but I feel like I did very well (and I definitely did not leave hungry). Now I just need to figure out a way to get back for a longer visit!

My morning is tragically lacking in beignets right now.
