Back in college I introduced a few friends of mine to watermelon vodka screwdrivers. They haven't touched so much as a watermelon-flavored jolly rancher since.
Luckily for me, I still adore watermelon flavor and it's my favorite summertime fruit. I dipped back into the vodka of said flavor last weekend to experiment. The results were delicious!
I diced a quarter of watermelon, and then used my hand mixer to juice it. Watermelon is great since you don't need to strain it, it's ready made juice!
In a cocktail shaker:
Fill about halfway with ice
1 shot watermelon vodka
1 shot pineapple vodka
1.5 cups watermelon puree
1 cup citrus soda, I used Diet 7-Up
Shake up, pour, and enjoy! I got a white wine glass full of the recipe, but you could halve it without any problems. This drink will sneak up on you like you wouldn't believe. It's also delicious and refreshing without being overly sweet and, as my husband put it, "girly".
I think I'm going to buy another watermelon or two and start freezing the puree for when company is over and make it by the pitcherfull. This is a pretty low-key drink that's sure to impress out by the grill. I'm going to grab a few dollar-store tumblers especially for this great summer treat. If you wanted to tone out the alcohol I think a half-cup of Pineapple juice would do the trick to make it more kid and pregnant-lady friendly.
What's your favorite summer cocktail?
