I’ve been looking into making some changes in my family’s diet, and one of the things I’m interested in trying is reducing the amount of dairy we eat. The problem is, I have an addiction. To ice cream.
So my first experiment is to test drive some dairy-free ice creams. There are several on the market, made from everything from soy to coconut to almonds to rice. I made my selection for my initial endeavor with the following criteria: 1) that the flavor sounded good to me, and 2) that it was on sale that day.
First up is Rice Dream Organic Frozen Dessert. I picked up the cocoa marble fudge flavor, because it sounded fancier than plain chocolate. It’s a dairy-free, gluten-free frozen concoction made from rice milk. And it’s good. Very good. It’s lighter than typical ice cream, but I actually prefer that because it isn’t as guilt inducing and doesn’t feel heavy in my stomach. I think this might be a keeper in the rotation. It also gets bonus points from coming in both pints and quarts.
If you are looking for an ice cream alternative, this is a good place to start.

I really enjoy the Rice Dream ice creams. They are better than coconut milk ice creams, I do believe, and don't give me a belly ache. Have not seen fancy favors at my store...I'll have to ask the manager!

I'm lactose-intolerant, so we get dairy free ice cream all of the time. One of our favorites has been by the brand Good Karma...their French Vanilla is amazing!

I love rice dream! The almond milk versions are also excellent, and try making your own "ice cream" with frozen bananas! ( google vegan banana ice cream and there are a ton of 3 ingredient blender recipes)
