After Christmas I traveled to New York and made it my mission to eat as many cupcakes as I could find. This was not an easy task. Cupcakes are all the rage, especially in NYC. My friend came up with the idea that we would do a cupcake crawl on my birthday. Since I'm pregnant, I can't do the typical pub crawl. Cupcakes are an excellent replacement, I highly recommend it!
Molly's: They won on Cupcake Wars. The shop was really cute and roomy for NYC standards. They are located in Greenwich Village. They are known for "the ron bennington." It was really good, but be sure you like peanut butter! We also got a cupcake with peanut butter in the middle and Butterfinger on top.
Sweet Revenge: This place came highly recommended to me, and it did not disappoint. This place is more of a restaurant/bistro feel. They have happy hours and serve light lunches. The waiter was really friendly, and put a candle in my cupcake. They only have 4 cupcake choices. I could taste the quality of ingredients in every bite. I had the Pure and my friend had the Sweet Revenge. I was a little bit peanut buttered out, so I preferred the Pure. My friend swears by the Red Velvet, alas I'm not a Red Velvet fan. You'll find Sweet Revenge in Greenwich village.
Crumbs: There are lots of cupcakes to choose from at this place. The locals aren't as impressed with Crumbs because of its popularity. It's a tiny shop, you order and get out. Be forewarned, that they have the calories posted by each cupcake. There's even one in Newark airport to enjoy on your way out of town. We went to the one in Bryant Park. I had the Pecan Pie and it was really good. Although, I would've liked a little bit more caramel.
Two Little Red Hens: I had a coconut cream cupcake here, which is not like me at all. It was really tasty, but I wish that they hadn't put any fillling in it. It didn't need it. This cupcake was $4, pretty steep for a no name bakery. This bakery is located on the upper east side. If you are that far up there, I would recommend stopping in, because it's off the beaten path.
Baked by Melissa: This place came recommended, but they were my least favorite. Too tiny! They are $3 for 3. And those little tiny bites are not enough for me! I had S'mores, Peanut Butter, and Cinnamon. You can find them all over the city. We went to the shop by Grand Central. It's an in-and-out sort of place.
One of the big shops we missed was Magnolia Bakery. I saw one in Bloomingdale's but was really stuffed, so a cupcake didn't sound good at that point. Maybe next time!
If I had to choose a winner, I would say Sweet Revenge was the best. Molly's was my second favorite.
What's your favorite cupcake shop in NYC or locally?

Drooling over here. Glad you liked Sweet Revenge.
