Before I went to Nashville, I’d never heard the term Meat and Three, but it’s a way of life there and in much of the South. For the uninitiated, like me, Meat and Three means a restaurant that serves home-style food where you choose one of a handful of meat options and up to three side dishes, usually a Southern smorgasbord of mashed potatoes, macaroni & cheese, greens, beans, and other assorted yummies. This is truly comfort food.
My friends took us to their favorite Meat and Three, the Copper Kettle. A very charming little place, their main draw is the meat and sides combo, but they also host a variety of salads, sandwiches, and wraps as well. (I’m not quite sure how an ahi tuna salad sits next to fried chicken and turnip greens, but clearly, there’s a variety here for the clientele.) I had the Thursday night staple of pot roast, while my husband tried the pork chops (pan fried, natch). This is some fine down-home cooking, I must say, I can just imagine generations of families in the kitchen whipping up these meals for Sunday dinner (so what if it was Thursday). The sides were equally fantastic, especially the mac & cheese.
I only wish I could have been there on a Sunday for their brunch, which sounds fantastic.
If you’re in and around these parts, you cannot go wrong with the Copper Kettle, or just about any Meat and Three, I would imagine. It’s a lot of tasty food for not a lot of money, and you will walk out full and happy.
